If you’re a keen cyclist and love nothing more than pulling on your custom cycling jerseys, then looking after your bike will no doubt be your number one priority. However, it seems that depending on where you live in the UK you may be more likely to have your pride and joy pinched than others.
Co-op Insurance research has revealed the top ten hotspots for bicycle thefts: the East Midlands, the West Midlands, London, Wales, Scotland, the south-east, Yorkshire and Humber, the south-west, the north-west and finally the north-east.
If you don’t want to leave your bike outside where it’s potentially more likely to be stolen, think about bringing it into the house. Apparently, 376,000 households put their bicycles in the bedroom, while others keep them in the hallway or living room, as well as the utility room.
“Our advice for keeping your bike safe is to use the very best locks you can afford on the bike itself and, importantly, the place where you store it, such as a shed or garage or even your home itself. Consider marking it with your postcode or a forensic marking product so if it is stolen, you have a greater chance of getting it back,” chair of Neighbourhood Watch Jim Maddan said.
If your bike is stolen, make sure you notify the police immediately. You can also report it to Bike Shepherd which will help you to spread the word about the theft. And don’t forget to let your insurance company know as soon as you can.
