Well what a day! The Queen K definitely was the overall winner on the day, she most definitely made everyone show their strengths and weaknesses, and pushed us all beyond our limits…amazing what one stretch of road can do!
The day started off with the hustle and bustle of the mass female swim start. I’m not the most confident in the water so self seeded myself a little further back from the line. I managed to find my rhythm and what I thought was a good bunch to be in, coming out of the water I was disappointed to see 1.05 swim time, but glad it was out of the way so I could get my head down on the bike.
I’ve been working a lot on my riding lately due to injury, and riding a new Scott Plasma, well; I was in my element. I stuck to my own race and power numbers and just pushed on. Turning round at Hawi I was feeling really strong and wanting to make up as much time before racking my bike and just trying to hold on.
The run was never going to be pretty for me. With injury, run fitness is something that really does take its toll. I started off sensibly with my pacing and just hoped I could hold on, which somehow I did. Around 11 miles, having struggled to get nutrition in on the bike, i was having even worse stomach problems and from here on would be hunting down a portaloo every 3 miles. Not ideal for a quick run split.
Coming back into town I was able to pick up the pace for the last mile, not sure whether that was due to the atmosphere, the thought of it being over or the knowledge that there’d be a toilet, either way, running down Ali’i drive and across the finish line was another roller coaster of emotion.
Finishing 2nd in my AG, 7th AG female overall and riding the fastest AG bike split, am I pleased…Yes! I think I am.
I’d like to come back when my run legs and fitness are at their full potential and see what will happen again. But for now, the TT bike is racked on the wall for a couple of weeks, whilst I’ll be out exploring the great outdoors of NZ.
As my coach wisely said ‘The Queen K will destroy everyone…it’s just a matter of when’
Cheers for the AWESOME Raceskin kit :)
